George Walter
Designer, Account Executive, President
Trained at the famed University of Cincinnati in its Graphic Arts Department, George interrupted his advanced degree program at Syracuse University to accept an offer he could not well refuse: Vice President of Advertising/Graphics for Merchants’ Coupon Publications targeted at new homeowners in New York state and Ohio. While there, George was instrumental in establishing four mid-Western offices. During his tenure, George’s design proficiency and considerable “board skills,” were augmented by a keen organizational and administrative ability. He supervised a staff of 20 artists. This experience would, decades later, stand him in good stead as the president of Graphicus Communications.
George and his wife, Sandy, left Syracuse in 1969 to come home to the south Jersey coast where they settled with their two children. He became art director for Wheaton/Nuline, the consumer division of Wheaton Industries, at the time the world’s leading specialty and pharmaceutical glassware company. George was chief designer for the consumer division until 1972.
From 1972-78, George served as senior art director for what was then South Jersey’s largest agency. Located in Millville, he worked on national and international business-to-business/consumer accounts.
George started Graphicus Communications in 1978 to service the developing shore area with design services and the occasional ad program. The casino industry was beginning to transform Atlantic City; and George won two of the first accounts there—The Ramada Inn Resort & Casino and Caesar’s Casino, in addition to New Jersey Bell and Atlantic Electric.
In 1981, he returned to the same Millville agency, this time as its vice-president. He remained there for four years, supervising the creative staff and serving as principal account executive for the firm’s largest accounts, such as British Aerospace and Ocean Yachts.
In 1985, George accepted a newly created position of vice-president of communications for Ocean Yachts. He was responsible for all aspects of Ocean’s marketing programs—from national advertising and public relations, to boat shows and special events.
In 1990, George established the second Graphicus Communications in his home in Millville. Now, ten years later, the firm can boast of some of the marine industry’s leading accounts: Ocean—among them.
Today, George functions as chief architect of the agency’s client planning services, overall director of accounts, and account executive for the company’s major clients. He also remains very active in its graphic design. George serves on the Main Street Millville Design Committee and is on the Board of Directors of the Levoy Theatre Preservation Society, of Millville, NJ.
